Experience
I first discovered my love of tutoring as a physics grad student. Nothing gave me more pleasure than seeing a student’s face light up as a difficult concept was finally made clear. I learned that tutoring was part subject matter expertise, part psychology, and part learning the ‘tricks of the trade’. Physics and math can be tough! My job is to remove the stumbling blocks of confusion, unclear textbooks and teachers, and subtle misconceptions that can sneak in. In fact, it’s the misconceptions that you are not aware of -- where you THINK you know something but do not -- that are the most troublesome. It's my job as a tutor to unearth and correct those misconceptions. But that's just the start. With physics and math -- and tests like the SAT and ACT – you MUST be able to solve problems. And effective problem solving involves many skills coming together -- interpreting problem statements, setting up and solving the math, keeping your wits about you so you can apply what you know under stress. And of course there are tricks of the trade. I am also a strong proponent of effective learning strategies. Yes, some methods of study and learning have been clearly shown to be much more effective than others. Learning is hard work, so let’s make every minute of that work pay off.
